Ramayana vs Adipurush Box Office: ₹500 Crore Opening Expected, But Why Is Ranbir Kapoor's Film Falling Short?

The box office battle between two ambitious mythological spectacles has taken an interesting turn. While Ramayana: Part One arrived in cinemas with enormous expectations, its initial theatrical performance has raised several important questions.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash and Sunny Deol, Ramayana was expected to create a historic box office storm. Given its reported massive production budget and grand cinematic scale, expectations were that the film would cross the ₹500 crore worldwide mark within its opening few days.

However, the initial box office figures tell a somewhat different story.

adipurush

Interestingly, when compared with Prabhas’ Adipurush, Ramayana finds itself in a surprising position. It is trailing behind Adipurush in India’s domestic collections but has managed to take the lead in worldwide gross earnings.

So, what exactly is happening at the box office? Why is a film of this magnitude not generating the expected domestic numbers? And can it still achieve the extraordinary box office performance anticipated before its release?

Let’s take a closer look.

Ramayana vs Adipurush: First Two Days Box Office Comparison

According to Sacnilk’s box office tracking, Adipurush opened with a stronger domestic performance than Ramayana.

Adipurush collected ₹86.75 crore net in India on its opening day, while Ramayana recorded ₹64.85 crore.

The difference continued on Day 2. Adipurush earned ₹65.25 crore, whereas Ramayana collected ₹48.05 crore.

Here is the detailed comparison:

Box Office PerformanceRamayanaAdipurush
Day 1 India Net₹64.85 Cr₹86.75 Cr
Day 2 India Net₹48.05 Cr₹65.25 Cr
Total India Net₹112.90 Cr₹152.00 Cr
Total India Gross₹134.80 Cr₹180.78 Cr
Worldwide Gross₹230.05 Cr₹215.78 Cr

Figures are based on Sacnilk‘s reported estimates.

The difference is significant. Adipurush collected approximately ₹39.10 crore more than Ramayana in India during its first two days.

However, the worldwide comparison tells a completely different story.

Worldwide Box Office: Ramayana Takes the Lead

Despite trailing Adipurush in India, Ramayana has managed to outperform the Prabhas starrer in worldwide gross collections.

After two days, Ramayana accumulated approximately ₹230.05 crore worldwide, compared with Adipurush’s ₹215.78 crore.

One of the biggest reasons behind this difference is the overseas market.

Ramayana generated approximately ₹95.25 crore from international markets in its first two days. In comparison, Adipurush collected around ₹35 crore overseas during the same period.

This means Ramayana has established a considerably stronger international presence.

Its overseas performance is particularly encouraging, suggesting that the film has found an audience beyond the traditional Indian theatrical market.

₹500 Crore Opening Was Expected: Why Is Ramayana Falling Short?

Perhaps the biggest talking point surrounding Ramayana is the gap between its enormous expectations and its actual box office performance.

With reports suggesting that the first instalment has been made on an estimated budget of approximately ₹1,200–1,500 crore, expectations were naturally sky-high.

A cinematic spectacle featuring a celebrated director, a massive star cast and one of India’s most iconic mythological stories was expected to create an extraordinary opening.

Many moviegoers and trade observers anticipated that Ramayana could cross the ₹500 crore worldwide mark within its initial few days.

However, after two days, the film has collected approximately ₹230.05 crore worldwide.

Although this is a substantial opening by normal box office standards, it remains below the ambitious expectations surrounding the project.

The film still needs another significant jump in collections to reach the ₹500 crore milestone.

The concern is not that Ramayana has opened poorly in absolute terms. Rather, it is that a film carrying such a massive reported production cost was expected to create a much bigger box office storm, particularly in the Indian market.

Its international performance has been encouraging, but its domestic numbers suggest that the film still has considerable ground to cover.

Why Is Ramayana Not Earning as Expected at the Indian Box Office?

Ramayana was expected to become a major theatrical event. However, several factors could be influencing its domestic box office momentum.

1. Opening Day Below Expectations

The biggest concern is the opening itself.

Despite considerable anticipation, Ramayana opened at ₹64.85 crore net in India, significantly below Adipurush’s ₹86.75 crore.

For a project carrying such enormous expectations, many trade observers anticipated a stronger opening.

Although ₹64.85 crore remains a huge opening by normal box office standards, comparisons with the biggest Indian theatrical events make the performance appear relatively modest.

2. The Pre-Diwali Release Timing

Ramayana arrived in cinemas just days before Diwali.

While the festive season can attract audiences, the days leading up to major festivals can also affect theatrical footfalls.

Shopping, travel, family commitments and other celebrations may influence movie-going decisions.

This could be one of the factors behind the relatively softer domestic momentum, although its actual impact cannot be established from box office figures alone.

3. Extremely High Audience Expectations

Ramayana is not an ordinary commercial film.

The story has a deep cultural and emotional connection with Indian audiences. Consequently, viewers are likely to have exceptionally high expectations regarding storytelling, character portrayals, visual presentation and emotional impact.

A film based on such a familiar epic has to satisfy both cinematic expectations and the audience’s personal understanding of the story.

That creates a different kind of box office challenge.

4. Lower Theatre Occupancy Compared With Adipurush

According to Sacnilk, Ramayana recorded an overall India occupancy of 36% on Day 1, which declined to 28.9% on Day 2.

Adipurush, meanwhile, registered 52.3% occupancy on its opening day and 47.1% on Day 2.

These numbers highlight a noticeable difference in theatre utilisation.

Ramayana’s show count was also substantially higher, yet its occupancy remained comparatively lower.

This suggests that converting available theatrical capacity into actual ticket sales remains an important challenge for the film.

5. Strong Overseas Business Is Not Enough to Dominate India

One of the most positive developments for Ramayana is its international performance.

Its overseas gross of ₹95.25 crore in two days has helped it surpass Adipurush worldwide.

However, the Indian theatrical market remains an important benchmark for a large-scale Indian mythological film.

Its international success is encouraging, but stronger domestic footfalls will be necessary to establish the kind of box office dominance that was anticipated before release.

Ramayana vs Adipurush: Which Film Has the Stronger Position?

At this early stage, the answer depends on which market we are considering.

Adipurush clearly performed better in India during its first two days, collecting ₹152 crore net compared with Ramayana’s ₹112.90 crore.

On the other hand, Ramayana has established a stronger worldwide position, collecting approximately ₹230.05 crore against Adipurush’s ₹215.78 crore.

The comparison also needs to be viewed in context. Adipurush released on a Friday and Saturday, whereas Ramayana opened on Thursday and recorded its second day on Friday. Different release-day patterns and market conditions make a direct comparison less straightforward.

Nevertheless, the numbers reveal an interesting difference between their domestic and international performances.

Can Ramayana Reach the ₹500 Crore Mark Soon?

With approximately ₹230.05 crore worldwide in its first two days, Ramayana has already crossed a major box office milestone.

However, reaching ₹500 crore requires another approximately ₹270 crore.

The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the film can achieve that target quickly.

A strong weekend jump, positive audience word of mouth and improved domestic occupancy could significantly change its box office trajectory.

Its overseas performance provides an additional advantage, but the film will need stronger audience turnout in India to match the extraordinary expectations surrounding its production scale.

A Strong Worldwide Start, But Domestic Expectations Remain Unfulfilled

It would be too early to describe Ramayana as a box office disappointment.

Its worldwide collection of approximately ₹230.05 crore in just two days is a substantial achievement, and its overseas performance provides a strong reason for optimism.

However, its domestic numbers are not matching the enormous expectations surrounding the project.

For a film reportedly carrying a production budget of ₹1,200–1,500 crore, the expectation of crossing ₹500 crore worldwide within the initial few days was understandable.

The film has made a promising start, but it still needs stronger momentum to reach the level of box office dominance many expected.

For now, the biggest question remains:

Can Ramayana turn its impressive worldwide opening into a historic blockbuster, or will its domestic box office performance continue to fall short of expectations?

The next few days could provide the answer.
