Mahindra has given its iconic three-door Thar a major transformation, and this time it is much more than a cosmetic facelift. The new 2026 Mahindra Thar OG has arrived in India with a starting price of ₹10.32 lakh (ex-showroom), bringing a new platform, revised suspension, electric steering, more powerful engine options, new terrain modes and upgraded safety technology.

At first glance, the Thar OG still looks unmistakably like the rugged SUV that has become one of Mahindra’s most recognisable models. But look beyond the familiar silhouette and there are significant changes underneath.

Mahindra has essentially tried to make the Thar more comfortable and easier to live with on the road without taking away the off-road character that made it popular in the first place.

2026 Mahindra Thar OG Price in India

The new Thar OG is available in three variants: AXT, LXT and ZXT. The introductory price starts at ₹10.32 lakh and goes up to ₹18.99 lakh for the range-topping version.

These are introductory ex-showroom prices. Mahindra has stated that the introductory pricing is applicable to vehicles delivered until November 30, 2026.

This Is Not Just a Cosmetic Facelift

The most interesting part of the 2026 Thar OG is what you cannot immediately see.

Mahindra has moved the three-door Thar onto its M_Glyde 4G platform, bringing architecture from the larger Thar Roxx into the smaller three-door SUV.

The rear suspension has also been redesigned around a PENTALINK setup with Watts Link. The changes are aimed at improving the SUV’s stability and ride behaviour while retaining the rugged hardware required for off-road driving.

In other words, Mahindra has not simply changed the bumpers and added a few features. The mechanical package underneath the Thar has received a substantial update.

More Power From the 2.2-Litre Diesel

The 2026 Thar OG continues with three engine options, but the larger engines now deliver more power and torque.

The biggest jump comes from the 2.2-litre diesel engine, which now produces 152 PS and 330 Nm. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 162 PS and 330 Nm.

The entry-level 1.5-litre diesel continues with 119 PS and 300 Nm and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

Electric Steering Could Change the Everyday Thar Experience

One of the most significant changes for people who actually drive the Thar regularly is the introduction of Electric Power Steering (EPS).

The previous Thar’s steering character was part of its rugged personality, but heavy steering could be noticeable during low-speed manoeuvring and parking. The move to electric steering should make everyday driving easier, particularly in urban conditions.

Mahindra has also introduced Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD) technology on the ZXT variant. The system is designed to adjust damping characteristics according to road conditions, with the aim of improving ride comfort and control.

Thar OG Gets New Terrain Modes

Mahindra has also focused heavily on the SUV’s off-road electronics.

4WD versions of the Thar OG get dedicated terrain modes designed for different surfaces:

• Sand
• Snow
• Mud

The SUV also gets an Electronic Locking Differential along with other traction and off-road assistance systems.

This means the new Thar is not relying solely on mechanical hardware for off-road performance. Its electronic systems are now playing a bigger role in helping the SUV maintain traction when conditions become difficult.

Safety Gets a Major Upgrade

Safety is another area where the 2026 Thar OG has taken a noticeable step forward.

The top-spec ZXT variant gets six airbags, while the SUV is also equipped with features such as front parking sensors, all-wheel disc brakes, Electronic Stability Program, rollover mitigation, hill-hold control and hill-descent control.

A rear-view camera is also available, making the three-door SUV easier to manoeuvre in tighter spaces.

The combination of additional airbags, electronic stability systems and improved braking hardware gives the new Thar a considerably more comprehensive safety package.

The Design Still Says “Thar”

Mahindra has been careful not to dilute the visual identity of the Thar.

The 2026 model retains the familiar upright body, boxy proportions, three-door layout and rugged stance. However, the front end gets a fresh treatment with a redesigned grille, new LED headlamps and C-shaped daytime running lights.

The LED fog lamps have also been redesigned and feature a cornering function.

At the rear, the Thar OG gets slimmer LED tail lamps and a redesigned bumper. Higher variants can also be equipped with new 19-inch alloy wheels, giving the SUV a more aggressive road presence.

The Cabin Is More Premium Than Before

The interior continues to follow the rugged philosophy of the Thar, but Mahindra has added several features aimed at making the cabin feel more modern and comfortable.

The new SUV gets brown leatherette upholstery, while rear passengers get soft armrests and cupholders.

The feature list includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other convenience features include push-button start, wireless charging and cruise control.

The top variants also get additional equipment aimed at making the Thar more suitable for everyday use rather than purely weekend off-roading.
